There has been much talk in recent weeks about Monday night’s major lunar event – the fact of the moon being ‘super’, ie the closest it gets to the earth.
I love this kind of thing. It reminds us, if we needed a prompt, of the beauty of nature; that the universe is bigger than us and all our problems. So I was really looking forward to seeing the moon.
A few days beforehand, the view out of our back window looked like this. Not the best ever photo, but you get the idea:
Fabulous, I thought – it’s going to be even better with the super-moon.
But, alas, it was not to be. A thick blanket of cloud over Edinburgh on Monday night meant that not even the super-est of moons could shine through.
Oh well, I thought, I will just have to wait until this phenomenon occurs again – only another 18 years to wait until 2034!
Meanwhile, I contented myself with looking at the beautiful moon photos circulating around – check out this National Geographic summary for example. And it so happens that my Mum bought me this great postcard when she last visited – I love the design aspect of it, and it means I can have a moon-fix whenever I like.
But then, something really unexpected happened – we found that we could see the moon in all its glory the following morning from our front windows!
This is a rather grainy shot, but shows the landscape in full:
And this magnificent picture was taken by Hub at the same time as mine above. You wouldn’t know it!! Hub under-exposed the shot to get the detail of the moon’s surface – stunning. I am now a happy moon-bunny! 🙂
Super that Super moon. We had a totally grey sky and couldn’t see a thing…. 😦 so thanks for those pictures Liz.

Ah, welcome to my world – Vancouver was cloudy, but there was a small opening for some lucky shutterbugs!!! Knowing there was a super moon behind the clouds was magical. Love your photos – two perspectives.

So well said. We had the visible moon for two nights now and I couldn’t see the difference, but I loved it too, just like you! Who care if you can see a difference, the moon is super!

It was beautiful here–I’m sorry you couldn’t see much of it. I tried to take photos but they really didn’t turn out, so I’m enjoying all the amazing ones real photographers took. Your husband did a great job!

I love the moon too but we had some cloud cover like you. Still got a few peeks though. Last full moon was also big (as will December’s be if I’ve understood correctly – just not as big as this one). And I was rewarded in October by the amazing sight of the moon setting behind the hill near us when I got up. I took pictures but they simply didn’t do it justice. There’s always something magical about gazing at the moon ….
(Great photo from your hub!)

I’m not sure what it is, but spotting the moon always seems to bring a sense of joy and peace. Very difficult to get decent photos – I am always trying, but am happy to let Hub do the heavy lifting 🙂 He says thanks for the compliment, by the way x
