Welcome to a year of fun and adventure as we read together that great work of Russian, indeed World Literature – War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Along with Becky from Tea, Toast and Trivia, and Elisabeth from A Russian Affair, I’ll be fulfilling a long-held ambition to read this amazing novel and I hope you will join us too.
The Readalong starts on 5 January 2022. We’ll be reading a chapter a day until 31 December 2022. Along the way, it will be marvellous to share thoughts, comments, insights, related reading and anything else you’d like to throw in to the mix. As we found in 2021 with our #KaramazovReadalong, community reading in bite-size chunks is such a wonderful way to work through a long book that might otherwise seem daunting to tackle. So please feel free to leave any suggestions and reactions on this or my other War and Peace Readalong pages or blog posts, or on social media. Remember to use #WarAndPeace2022 please so that we can find your comments.
From this page you can catch up on our blog posts and our podcasts on Tea, Toast and Trivia as we progress through the year (see below). I have also created a page of related resources and of course a full reading schedule.
I’ll be reading the translation by Anthony Briggs, which is published by Penguin Classics. But feel free to use any copy you may already have, or which particularly speaks to you. Part of the joy of a Readalong of a translated novel is comparing notes on different versions. So the more the merrier!
I am planning to post on Twitter and Instagram a ‘quote of the week’ each Wednesday. I also hope to publish a short blog post at the end of each Part. I’d love to hear about your choices and thoughts as we go along. Links to my social media pages are in the menu on the right hand side of this page.
Becky, Elisabeth and I look forward to this magnificent journey together and we would love you to join us. Let the reading begin!
I’m looking forward to the readalong. War and Peace is a big favourite of mine and I never get tired of (talking about) it!
