What Is Literature For?

A belated Happy World Book Day 2017 to everyone!

As an avid bibliophile, I love anything which promotes and celebrates the value of reading.  But, some may ask, why on earth should we care about books?  Surely life is too busy to fit in reading on top of everything else?

In other words, what is literature for?

Check out this short clip by The School of Life which answers this important question.  It is pretty quirky to look at, but the underlying messages are interesting and relevant.  Listen without the pictures if need be! 🙂

We’re Not Alone

What does it mean to be human?  What does it mean for you to be human?

Can there be a single answer?  While you are thinking about it, why not watch this short video, which highlights the perspective of a number of people around the world.  They are all like you and me; none of them are like you or me.  We are all different and we are all the same. 🙂

Am I being kind?

We are very excited at the moment because Hub has decided to retire early next July.  Although we still have some months to wait for this big event, and of course we do not want to wish our lives away, we are enjoying talking about how things will be different when he embarks on this new chapter in his life.

Be Your Own Cheerleader

What do you say to yourself each morning when you wake up?

Take a moment to think about how you greet the day.  Is it with a groan as you reach to press the snooze button?  Or is it with joy and gratitude as you happily embrace a new opportunity to begin afresh?

The things we say to ourselves really matter.  After all, if we cannot treat ourselves with love and respect, how can we expect others to do the same?  And perhaps more importantly, it is a truth that we cannot give what we do not have.  By developing a practice of self-love and appreciation we boost our chances of being able to contribute meaningfully to society and, in so doing, to live our best lives.

Although it might feel a bit strange, giving ourselves verbal high fives in the morning can make all the difference to the way in which the rest of the day pans out.  Not sure how to do it?  Check out this short clip in which an utterly awesome father helps his young daughter prepare for school.  This is a lesson for us all – why not give it a go? 🙂

But remember, be somebody that’s nice.”

The Value of Life-Long Learning

Who can deny the benefits of pushing oneself constantly to learn?

Helping us to keep an open mind; staying curious and interested about the world around us and further afield; helping us to understand and cope with change; facilitating the finding of meaning in our lives; creating opportunities to make the world a better place and actively contribute to our communities.

These are just a few of the reasons why we should all find ways to prioritise life-long learning.

It is well known that Benjamin Franklin articulated a thorough and structured means of ensuring that he achieved his daily goals.  By pursuing his ‘thirteen virtues’ and monitoring his progress, he created space for deliberate learning.

Here’s an interesting article that builds on Franklin’s approach and adds some further ideas about how to incorporate learning into our daily routine.

What about you?  How do you keep learning?  Any tips for the rest of us? 🙂

Challenge Your Beliefs

This is an interactive post.  Before you read on, grab an ordinary piece of paper and any pen or pencil.

Now, prepare to have some fun! Start this brilliant short video and play along – you’ll be delighted with the results.

Isn’t it great? I love the simplicity of Graham’s approach – both in relation to the cartoons, and in terms of getting across a very powerful message about how we can avoid limiting ourselves by challenging our beliefs.

Here’s a picture of my drawings – such adorable characters! I’d love to see yours too. 😀🎨
