Loving Vincent

Have you seen this latest project based on the works of Vincent Van Gogh?  It is a film generated solely by paintings inspired by Van Gogh’s original works, and narrated using material from his 800+ letters.  What an amazing collaboration – even this trailer is mesmerising to watch.  I can’t wait to see the final version….

Like millions of others, I find Van Gogh’s work to be moving and inspiring.  When I feel I can cope with the crowds, I hope one day to visit Amsterdam with Hub to look round, among other things, the Van Gogh Museum.  In the meantime, I can be contented via our own Scottish National Gallery, where there is coming soon a wonderful-sounding exhibition of works by Van Gogh, Monet and Daubigny.  I am sure this will be yet another stunning summer treat by the gallery.

“I Lava You”

Check out this beautiful short animation produced by Disney Pixar, as posted by the wonderful Mastin Kipp.  I guarantee it will bring a smile to your face…

Dalí + Disney = ?

Check out this fascinating article by Open Culture about a potential collaboration between Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney in the 1940s called Destino.

Fortunately for us, this short film has been produced which imagines what might have emerged, had the project been finished.

It is a beautiful piece, merging together Dalí’s surreal art with Disney’s Fantasia-like animation.

As the article notes, one can only guess at the other treasures which might have been produced, had the Disney company been in a financial position to do this kind of work, as well as focusing on commercially-viable output.

To Boldy Go……

First off, let me confess to anyone who does not already know that I am an out and out Trekkie.  I am a die-hard Voyager fan in particular, but will watch pretty much anything to do with Star Trek.  (I realise writing this that I completely forgot to mention this in my responses to Ute’s questions recently, but there you go…!)

All kinds of joy

Have you seen the film Frozen? If not, you really should take a look at it. Yes, I know it is for kids, but it is a fabulous watch.

Anyway, you may know that it sparked this crazy phenomenon where people lip-synced to songs from the film in their cars and recorded themselves doing so.

“A Far More Pleasing Countenance”*

My sister and I, along with the rest of the world, gave cries of dismay yesterday when we heard the sad news of the death of Alan Rickman.  That towering British actor who has moved us and excited us in so many landmark roles over the years.

Rather than trying to reprise his entire oeuvre here, I decided to highlight just one major work.  One of my favourites, if not the favourite.  It is the film which my sister and I immediately earmarked as Saturday-afternoon viewing.  Something we would have chosen to watch anyway, but particularly fitting in the circumstances.

It is the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility.
