It’s The Inside That Counts

My sister, Rachel, is the most amazing person.  She has met and surpassed the challenges of all kinds of battles in her life, always with dignity, pragmatism and a positive attitude.

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.”
~ Lao Tzu

In the last couple of weeks, she has once again had to draw on all her strength and resources.  Out of the blue, she discovered that she had developed the condition called Alopecia Areata.  The most difficult aspect of this has been coping with the experience of clumps and clumps of hair coming out over a short period of time.

Happily, now that she has lost virtually all her hair, she has been able to see her new look as just that; the latest of many different ‘hairstyles’ that she has rocked over the years.  I wanted to share with you this short video she filmed today in response to the many messages of support received from friends and family.  She is the living embodiment of the premise that what’s inside us matters 100% more than the outside.  Her message of acceptance; perspective and calm is an inspiration.

Thank you, Rach, for setting us all such a shining example of how to live our best life.  Love you loads. Xxx 🙂

“Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s about knowing and accepting who you are.”

  1. You are right, Liz, your sister, my younger daughter is an amazing example to us all. As a friend of mine said today Rachel is the sort of person that when life throws her lemons she makes lemonade. But thank you also for being such a strong support to your sister. Xx

  2. What a shock it must have been to Rachel and to you, her family, when this condition appeared so suddenly and so dramatically. But hair, or no hair, your sister has a wonderful presence on camera ( and in real life too, without a doubt), and, honestly, I was so taken with her gorgeous teeth, that I almost forgot to look at the hair situation. Hugs to both of you.

  3. Your sister is amazing Liz, as everyone keeps saying! And she has a pretty amazing sister, too.
A friend of mine is dealing with something similar, but in slower time. Would it be ok with Rachel if I showed her the video?

  4. It is, absolutely, what’s inside that counts – but also it’s what one chooses to show, or is able to show, of what’s inside. In that message Rachel exudes warmth, love, acceptance, courage, positivity and oh, so much more. She has such a stunning smile and a radiance… I just wanted to hug her – and that’s nothing to do with her situation: she just made me feel happy. She’s giving hugely of herself and that’s a real gift. What a special lady 🙂

And her new hairstyle looks fab!

  5. What a lovely video. Your sister is so beautiful (inside and out, those blue eyes…. and her words of course). I smiled when she talked about her hair dos and her hair don’ts. She has a wonderful attitude and I’m sure there were some dark moments especially as it happened quickly. So many of us deal with physical issues (we’ve discussed ours before) and it’s difficult to not be “at war” with our own bodies. Thank you for sharing your sister’s video.
