Unexpected Edinburgh

A few days ago I found myself in an office with the most magnificent roof-top views across to the castle, where the stands are being erected for this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.  I love seeing the ‘ribs’ of the stands emerging and then disappearing as more of the structure gets built.

Edinburgh is a city to look up in.  Around every corner, there is something interesting to see on the corner or top of a building.  Here are some examples…

And here, because I could not resist it, is another shot of the castle – I love the juxtaposition of the ancient fortress with the modern buildings at its foot.  It is one of the many things that makes this such a wonderful city. 🙂

  3. I love all those turrets! It seems almost out of character for a Scottish city to be so exotic, but I expect it is the French connection that brings out the romantic element in the architecture.

    1. There is definitely a French feeling here – or perhaps we might say that France is like us!!

  4. It is such a beautiful city, Always worth a visit. I love walking around there the street where it goes to the castle and the Princess street…. and and…

  5. I absolutely agree with Clare, there is a pervasive, and very attractive, French influence on Scottish architecture. The Auld Alliance! Edinburgh is a kind of fantasy city, so much more attractive since its gems were designed individually and over many centuries.
