Is there any greater pleasure in life than the acquisition of new stationery?
I have written previously about my love of pens and pencils. Today, I was able to add some more to my collection.
And not just any old pencils – oh no. After much deliberation, I finally decided to treat myself to a set of Blackwing pencils.
Described by some as the world’s finest pencils, I wondered just how good they could be. I must admit that I was swayed by the production of a limited edition set, designed in the style used by John Steinbeck when he used to write. What’s not to like, I thought, and took the plunge.
My only regret is that I did not get these sooner.
When you take the box out of its sleeve, you get the satisfaction of lifting the lid to reveal a slip detailing the history behind the production of the pencils. And then, drum roll, underneath the slip, are the pencils themselves. Oh, what beauties! I could look at them in their box as they are and not touch them at all. But taking one out, I knew I had to sharpen it and give it a try.
A special pencil needs a special sharpener. This one lets you sharpen the wood first and then the lead to get the optimum point. Bliss!
And as for the writing experience? Heavenly. No other word for it. I can’t imagine that Steinbeck would have had any complaints. I certainly don’t. 😀
This makes me want to run out and buy some! Stationery is utterly seductive isn’t it? Oscar Wilde might not have said “I can resist everything except stationery” but he should have said it.

You should definitely get some, Liz – you will never use another pencil again! 😀

Oh how I love stationary and a good pencil. Your description is so delectable, like describing a fine wine or delicious food. I am going to ask for these for my birthday. I do love your handwriting as well!

Thank you, Letizia! Writing with beautiful instruments encourages better writing, I find 😀 NB, this version of Blackwing is a limited edition – not sure when you have your birthday, but if you want the Steinbeck set you need to bear this in mind. I am sure the other sets are just as gorgeous though… 😀

I do love stationary and could get lost in a shop for that. Those pencils look great! Need to have a look at those. Your handwriting is beautiufl, you should have your own font in Word, called “Liz handwriting”. 🙂

It probably seems a bit daft to gush over a pencil, but hey – they’re sooo lovely!! 😀

I like your handwriting! Stationary is great, it would be wonderful to mooch a specialist stationary shop, I love the box and sharpener too. Writing is a wonderful art, so very intimate.

Thank you! Yes, browsing around a good stationery shop is a glorious experience – just like being in a wonderful second-hand bookshop. I would not mind if the world was made up only of these types of shops, although I suppose we might get a bit hungry…

There can be one food shop out of town where we can go for that boring stuff and all the other places should be independent, friendly awesome, quirky places. I really need to go to the bookshop again, it’s been at least two days since I have been in one.

That sounds like town planning to perfection! I hate to think of you rocking away with bookshop withdrawal symptoms and have crossed my fingers that your favourite one is open on a Sunday or at least a Bank Holiday…

They are all in Nottingham, I do hope to move there at some point this year, although that is a tentative plan and requires a job there as well. I will have to cope with the many books I already own…it’s a hard life.

Ah, right. Well it is good to have goals in life. I had never thought of Nottingham as being a brilliant bookshop destination. Bit of a trek from Edinburgh though. Thank goodness we have some fabulous independent booksellers and second hand shops up here – not that I need any new books at the moment…

It’s not a massive book place, there are a few bookshops and one of the best comic shops in Britain but as its the easiest to get to and they keep supplying me with books then I am happy. A trip up north sounds more enticing than ever now.

Well, we are a City of Literature – how can you resist?!? Check out this link which lists some great places. NB Looking Glass Books has now closed, which is a great shame because it was a fab shop. But there are still plenty more to visit… http://www.cityofliterature.com/the-literary-city/read/edinburgh-city-literature-starter-10/10-edinburgh-bookshops/

I came across a few of these on Jeff’s blog a while back, at least I don’t have to fly to Edinburgh as the bag tax would be obscene. I look forward to coming up soon!
